Why is my cat always cleaning himself?

DSCN2328If your cat(s) are anything like mine, they are a non stop road to lick themselves where there wont be any part of them left, and as far as they are concerned cleanliness is next to godliness! I have one that no matter the time of day or what’s going on around him he is always grooming himself.

I know that they spend about 20 % of their day grooming but I wanted to know why. So I did a little research and this is what I found out.

  1. It keeps the coat clean and smooth
  2. It helps to get rid of any parasites
  3. It reduces frustration and anxiety
  4. It cools down  the coat through their saliva. Your cats lick the fur to warm up or cool down
  5. It water proofs their coat. When he licks he is stimulating the glands at the base of the hairs to release a secretion that helps keep his coat waterproof.

Keeping a eye on your cats coat can tell a lot about what going on with them. If they stop grooming and the coat becomes unkempt it can indicate a sign of illness. Excessive licking can lead to baldness or areas that are red and inflamed another reason to see your veterinarian.

Brushing your cat daily helps them and reduces the hair balls. Especially for the long haired breeds. They and you will appreciate a few less hair balls in your life!
